Radiators, boilers, hot water systems etc.
In need of a central heating engineer? I am your local Gas Safe plumber working in this area. I offer a full central heating service to include boilers, radiators, hot water cylinders and all the other elements of central heating.
Have you ever stopped to think about how much we rely on central heating? It’s easy to take it for granted—until it stops working! Most homes have a boiler and steel radiators to stay warm, but like any system, they need regular maintenance. Over time, corrosion inside your radiators can lead to leaks, pressure loss, and inefficiency. Ignoring these issues can cause the entire system to break down, leaving you without heat or hot water.
One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is assuming their heating system doesn’t need maintenance. However, much like a car, central heating needs regular servicing to stay in good condition. I strongly recommend having a professional check it every five years. This helps identify minor issues early before they turn into expensive repairs.
Rust is the main culprit behind heating system failure. When water and oxygen mix, they cause steel to corrode—just drop a nail into a glass of water overnight, and you’ll see how quickly rust forms! The same process occurs inside your radiators, but on a much larger scale. To prevent corrosion, heating systems use a special chemical inhibitor, but this weakens over time, especially when fresh water is added to top up boiler pressure. As the inhibitor loses strength, rust turns into sludge, which can block radiators and make your heating far less efficient.
If sludge has already built up in your heating system, the only solution is a power flush. This process uses specialist equipment to clean out the system and remove blockages. While a power flush can restore efficiency, it takes time and costs money. The best approach is to maintain your heating system before it reaches that stage.
If your radiators aren’t heating properly or you’re considering upgrading to new ones with thermostatic radiator valves, I’m here to help. A well-maintained heating system will keep your home warm and your energy bills low.
